Pasi Kaarakainen
November 15, 2008
Many industries have been affected by worsened economy. The stock markets are on shaky ground and countries worldwide are in large debt. However, things are still looking good with internet home business.

People all over the world are losing their jobs, watching their 401K's empty, and slowly moving closer to bankruptcy. The great thing about the internet is there is an endless supply of opportunities and ideas to pursue and start working at home. Virtually anything you can think of there is a demand for on the internet.

As long as you are creative and driven, you can make it with your internet home business. It is true that there is extremely stiff competition on the internet with hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs starting every day. This can be a deciding factor for many people not even pursuing anything.

However, if you really want to make money doing something you enjoy, the internet is the place to look. You can start an internet home business doing something you are experienced with and truly help people. It is sad how many people lose their jobs and have nothing to fall back on. But there are a great deal of alternatives on the internet.

If one program or business fails for you, there is nothing stopping you from starting a new business. You understand that it is not possible to do this and achieve a success overnight, but this certainly is a possibility. In addition, there is nothing stopping you from doing multiple businesses or joining multiple internet business programs at once. This way if one is down, you can jump to the next to keep the incomes flowing.

To reiterate what was said above, you do have to be motivated and driven to succeed on the internet. There is an endless amount of freedom that is given to entrepreneurs as there is nobody to tell you what to do, when to do it by or when to work. If you are motivated and focused you get the job done without anyone's help. For some, it is difficult to put in a full day's work on the internet.

But with so much competition to face, you have to understand when you are not working your competition is passing you by. Therefore, it is best for you to set yourself a schedule to follow so you can get in a routine. This will make it much easier on you to actually succeed with your internet home business.

It is sad to watch people lose jobs left and right as the economy continues to plummet. At the moment one of the best opportunities you can imagine is starting an internet home business. So get on the internet and find something you have an interest in to profit from.

Make sure your small business insurance is up to date

Insurance is a wise investment to protect everything you've done to make your small business successful.

But is the policy you bought when you were just starting out adequate for your current needs, or the direction your company is heading? A periodic review of your insurance coverage will ensure you're prepared for all reasonable risks, and that you're truly getting the most from your monthly payments.

Start with a full assessment of your company's insurance needs. Business insurance safeguards your property against the consequences of fire, theft, liability, and other common risks. As your business has grown, however, you may have added new services and specialized equipment that require policy endorsements or modifications.

Disaster and business interruption insurance is also becoming a must for business owners concerned about damage or a prolonged shutdown resulting from natural disasters, incidents such as a toxic spill or transportation disruption, or acts of terrorism.

Though such events may be rare where your business is located, even a relatively minor event could disrupt your operations and the surrounding economy for several weeks.

Before purchasing a policy or increasing your insurance coverage, consider all the possible ways of holding down the costs. Cover the most risky and largest perils first, then work down your list of priorities. Don't purchase coverage you don't need, but also don't overlook seemingly minor risks simply for the sake of saving money. If the probability is small, the premium will be too. Use a deductible as high as you feel your cash flow and savings will allow.

Making wise insurance decisions is easier when you work with a reputable and qualified broker agent or consultant. Conducting research on your own is also helpful, but a qualified professional can make an informed evaluation of your small business insurance needs, and match them with available coverage options. A search feature www.iiaa.org, the site of the Independent Insurance Agents of America, will help you find qualified professionals in your community with special expertise in small business needs.

Note that many small business policies offer the option of adding riders as opposed to buying separate policies. That's why purchasing all of your coverage from a single agency or broker will help reduce costs. If multiple policies are necessary, make sure they cover separate risks. Otherwise, you'll be making unnecessary payments for what is essentially the same coverage.

Reasons why your small business needs a website

Reasons why your small business needs a website
10/19/2008 12:02 AM
What can a website do for your small business? A better question may be what it cannot do. The Internet has become so pervasive in our daily lives that nearly every kind of business, regardless of size, service or clientele, can benefit from having a presence on the Web. Here are a few reasons:

4Facilitate communications. With e-mail, you can communicate with customers, suppliers and partners anywhere in the world.

424/7 availability. Current customers can contact you any time of day from any time zone. Prospective customers may browse your site at their convenience to learn about your company and the products and services it offers.

4Reach a global clientele. Because the Internet is used by millions worldwide, you can reach potential customers without opening shop overseas. Translation software makes your website available to a wider range of visitors.

Here are some steps to get you started on developing a small business website:

4Decide if you want to hire a web designer or create your own site. If you want to hire someone, search the web for possible candidates. If you want to do it yourself, there are many helpful books available about web publishing.

4Apply for a domain name. There are several services that will register you and put on the right search engines. A search on www.google.com or www.yahoo.com will help you identify directories of domain names that are already reserved or in use.

4Organize and outline all of the information that you want on your website.

4Choose a look for your site. Visit other sites to get ideas but, remember, your site is a marketing tool. Use your brand identity - don't stray from the look your customers are familiar with.

4Provide a service as well as a presentation about your company and its product. Give your customers some helpful tips or advice and gently steer them toward buying your product.

4Make it easy to use. Otherwise, visitors will lose patience and go elsewhere.

4Market it. Along with getting registered on the major search engines, send out traditional and electronic press releases to alert the public about your site. Develop mutual link partnerships with other companies. Update your content constantly. You want your visitors to visit more than once, so give them a reason to come back.

Survival techniques for small businesses

Dennis G. Hunter/For the Times-Standard
Article Launched: 08/31/2008 01:33:27 AM PDT

In 1984, the world of marketing was turned upside down when a popular book was written by Jay Conrad Levinson. Titled “Guerrilla Marketing,” the book provided small businesses with unconventional marketing strategies that relied on time, energy and imagination instead of big marketing budgets.

These strategies made it possible for the small guys and gals to compete with the “big boys.” In reviewing that book, I find that most of the strategies still hold true today -- 24 years later.

For instance, a small business holds certain advantages over a large company. A small business owner is more active in the community, can obtain publicity more easily and can get much closer to his or her customers. That's a definite competitive edge.

In Levinson's book, he states, “In order to sell a product or a service, a company must establish a relationship with the customer. It must build trust and support. It must understand the customer's needs, and it must provide a product that delivers the promised benefits.”

When a small business provides a customer what he or she needs, how does that business then survive and grow in this volatile economic climate? There has been an ongoing debate: Should you focus on acquiring new customers or do more business with the customer base you already have?

An old marketing adage says, “80 percent of new business will come from your existing customers.” So, with a small
Advertisement
marketing budget, it would seem feasible to target your existing customers. After all, they have been sold on your business already.

But, wait! What about attrition? People will eventually move away or move to a competitor. Attrition is why a small business should always keep an eye out for new customers in addition to serving its existing customers.

While serving your existing customers, always remember to ask for referrals. Positive word-of-mouth advertising is the most effective form of advertising you can buy -- and, you'll love the price. It's free! In summary, from a marketing perspective, a small business owner must plan a two-pronged strategy: Attract new customers while retaining the ones you already have.

Other small business survival strategies over and above a “guerrilla marketing” approach include maintaining good credit and providing enough capital to run the business. In a conversation I had with our credit union's Business Services Manager, Dan Sweet, he pointed out some of the attributes a financial institution looks for when considering a small business loan.

”We look at the owners' credit history and their proven ability to manage their business. We also consider the owners' breadth of management expertise in such areas as marketing, production, personnel, financial planning and management.”

Partnering with a local financial institution can save a small business a large amount of time and money as those institutions can make quick local decisions and base those decisions on more than numbers on a piece of paper. Some of the services a small business owner may look for would be a checking account for payables and payroll disbursements; a savings or money market account for holding excess funds in reserve; and a business line of credit for short-term funding needs.

But what about those small businesses without a proven track record? There are three directions that a small business with less than two years of experience can take if it needs that extra capital:

1. It can seek a small loan from either the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission or the Arcata Economic Development Corporation.

2. It can seek a loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration provided by local lenders, and,

3. It can seek guidance and training provided by the Small Business Development Center with locations in both Eureka and Crescent City.

A discussion of small business survival wouldn't be complete without a discussion about the biggest asset or liability you have -- your employees. They can make or break your business, so take the time to select the right person for the job and train them so that they become an integral part of your business.

Attitude is also critical. Positive attitude comes directly from the owner. Be happy doing what you are doing and be open to ideas and suggestions. Remember that your attitude, whether positive or negative, is reflected on the faces of your employees and your customers.

Finally, here's my interpretation of another old adage: “Those who fail to plan should plan to fail.” That's so true in the operation of a small business when you need every advantage you can seize upon to stay ahead of your competition.

Every business, regardless of its size, should have a current business plan and a marketing plan each with short-term and long-term goals. These plans should be workable, achievable, realistic and should offer you flexibility if your situation changes.

Above all else, learn from the experiences of other small businesses that faced similar competition from the “big boys.” Do the research, know your market, know your competitors and, above all, know your customers.

It's a tough job, but it can be done. And, nothing is more rewarding than creating a small business and watching it grow.
